Board Briefs: Sept. 9, 2025

Here are a few highlights from the Sept. 9 board meeting (the agenda packet is available):

Board hears update on summer learning

Staff provided an update on summer programs offered in 2025, including special education, credit recovery, enrichment, expanded learning and readiness opportunities. Each school site tailored its offerings to meet the specific needs and interests of its students. In collaboration with educational and community partners, the district offered a diverse range of engaging learning experiences for students across all its sites. This summer, more than 8,500 students participated in a summer learning offering.

Update provided on  the San Juan Education Foundation

An update was provided on the activities and progress from the San Juan Education Foundation, an independent non-profit organization that provides grants and support directly to San Juan Unified teachers and schools. Grants are provided directly to teachers at three different funding levels, and the foundation has grown in scholarship funds given to graduating seniors. A 15-member board leads efforts to raise funds and resources, with day-to-day operations handled by an executive director who is employed jointly with the district through a memorandum of understanding. The foundation is guided by its strategic plan focused on increasing fundraising efforts, increasing the organization's supporters, growing awareness of its efforts and achieving sustainability.
