Introduction to the CTE Pathways

Eagle Polytechnic Institute

What is EPI? The Eagle Polytechnic Institute is an integrated academic program which provides students with the opportunity to develop skills using technology for research, communications, presentation and project development, and provides an innovative and challenging academic curriculum with hands on activities that teach students how to apply their knowledge.

The goal of EPI is to provide strong academic and technical skills which prepare students for advanced study at colleges, universities, or technical schools in majors such as Architecture, Manufacturing, Engineering, or Electronics. EPI is a three year program of sophomore through senior year students who enroll in a series of courses taught by EPI instructors. Students may enter the program in their sophomore or junior year. This integrated program is designed to assist students in selecting a career to build their future.

Technology courses offered include EPI Pre-Engineering Tech 1, 2, and 3 at the Sophomore, Junior, and Senior levels.

Is EPI for you? Well that is up to you to decide.

  • Answer these questions and pick up information in the counseling office…
  • Do you enjoy working with your hands?
  • Have you ever dreamed of building, planning, or designing something?
  • Would you like to earn 13 units of college credits while still in high school?
  • Are you interested in a more technical reading and writing English class?
  • Do you like working on computers or figuring out how things work?
  • What do you think about group projects that integrate two or more subjects?
  • Would you like to go on a field trip to Intel, Pacific Bell, Hewlett Packard, or Cal Trans?

If you answered yes to two or more questions then EPI might just be for you.

Media Arts Pathway

This pathway will expose students to the powerful media of audio and video production, and the opportunity to join the KYDS 91.5 FM student-run radio station. These courses focus on producing projects from concept, pre-production through post-production, and will emphasize the importance of story and communicating with the intended audience. Several genres of production (news, interviews, PSAs, creative) will be explored and produced. Students will learn and use industry-aligned software, as well as high-level camera operation and production equipment.

Students will produce content for public display, organize live events and cover news on campus. The courses will hone audio and video production skills and focus students on creating content for broadcast locally in class and for weekly broadcast to the campus and community via the internet and live or recorded on KYDS 91.5 FM. Students will evaluate the elements of story, art, principles of design and the integration of technology to achieve the desired message and communication with an audience on a deadline. Field trips to local news and radio stations will help to connect students to the skills needed for a variety of career opportunities in the live broadcasting audio and video production fields. Students will then work collaboratively in production crews that have assigned control room or studio jobs where they will develop the skills needed in the workforce.

Theater Arts Pathway

The CTE Theatre Pathway at El Camino offers students an opportunity to explore the many various elements that make up the world of professional theatre. In Intro to Theatre we strive to find confidence using our imaginations, voices, and bodies via different types of theatre games and exercises; in Professional Theatre Practices we do a deeper dive into the professional actor's process; in the Capstone Class, Directing & Design, we focus on all of the aspects that make a theatre production look and sound the way they do: costume, set, lighting and sound design, as well as how to direct actors and create pictures on stage. Also, we offer 2-3 opportunities a year to put the classroom theories to the test, via main stage plays and musicals. If theatre and performance is interesting to you, come check us out!
